Content of the study program

Through the SGU program, I had a three-month stay at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. I was accepted into the research group led by Dr. Hirotaka Sato, who is a faculty member of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. I spent 90 days in the research group to complete my research in collaboration with Dr. Sato and the team members.

Study results

While at Nanyang Technological University, I focused on elucidating the flying mechanism of insects. I conducted two types of experiments to capture the role of the beetle’s middle legs to control wing folding. The first used a 3D motion capture system (VICON) to quantitatively measure the folding amplitude and the position of each set of legs when a beetle lowers their legs. The second used wireless electric stimulations on muscles and free flying experiments with the inertial measurement unit installed on the back of a beetle. VICON experiments provided quantitative data that supported my hypothesis. The free-flying experiments resulted in both quantitatively and visually significant data to support the role of the middle legs compared to the forelegs and hindlegs.

My experience abroad

I have never experienced a long-term stay overseas, so life in a multicultural country like Singapore was very stimulating. Many cultures and customs from around the world gather in Singapore. At first, I was confused by many new things. I also experienced difficulties explaining my specialized research content in English. However, by actively trying to communicate with gestures, I received support from others. Working on research in collaboration with overseas students in this new environment was very meaningful.

Influence on my future career

This study abroad experience directly exposed me to many cultures and provided an opportunity to revise my own value system. I also re-realized the importance of English skills while communicating in English in Singapore. In the future, I do not know if I will have opportunities to use English in my desired occupation. Nonetheless, as a communication tool with people from other countries and to broaden my perspective, I strongly wish to improve my language skills.

Other comments

I would like to use this opportunity to show my appreciation for everyone in SGU, the professor who recommended the program, and people who accepted me at the visiting university. In foreign universities, many students seemed to be studying abroad using a variety of study-abroad systems. It would be beneficial for Japan if more programs like SGU were widely accessible to reduce the barriers for studying abroad. Such environments will widen the perspectives and options of students. This experience was also a great opportunity to rethink my own future.
